Examples of Good and Bad Reviews

CHECK OUT THESE GREAT REVIEWS.

The reviewer has written a clear description of the book and has told the reader why this book is worth reading or not reading.

Funke, Cornelia. Dragon Rider.

The book is about a dragon, an orphan boy, and a short tempered brownie. It starts out when a valley full of dragons is about to be discovered by humans. Firedrake, a middle age dragon, sets out to find the rim of heaven with his companion brownie, Sorrel, to escape the humans’ grasp. A long the way they met Ben, the orphan boy. The three are followed by the Golden One, Nettlebrand, who has a appetite for dragons.  They have other small adventures. Will Ben get the family he’s always wanted? Find out for yourself.        I like the book because it had a good plot. I like her definition of brownies, and I like dragons. If you like adventures and dragons read this book.

Lord, Cynthia. Rules.

One of the best books is on the 2009 High Tea List. Rules is about a girl named Catherine and her brother, David, who has autism. Catherine goes to a clinic with David when he has occupational therapy. She has trouble with people with and without disabilities. I liked this book and I know you will, too! One thing I like is that the book teachers that it doesn’t matter if you have a disability. Everyone can still be friends.

Rowling, J.K. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

I thought this book was one of the best of the series! This book was about Harry Potter goes to his Godfather, Sirius Black’s, house. He finds out about the people really working hard to fight off… well you know who. He meets new allies in his ongoing quest to defeat Voldemort. He gets yet another Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, a Ministry of Magic worker who takes over. He forms a group called Dumbledore’s Army and more.    I really like the series but this one was one of my favorites. My favorite genre is fantasy because it lets you use your imagination. I loved this book because I thought it had great details and it gets right to the point in the beginning. I really don’t like books that start slow and has no action. I really like these books because they get the book going without hesitation. You should definitely read these books!    (Note: Please read the others before you read this one! I once tried reading this one first when I was younger… I got soooooo confused)

Siegel, Siena Cheison. To Dance: a Memoir

To Dance is about a girl named Sienna. She loves to dance. Once she starts taking dance classes she starts to love it more and more. will a broken ankle stop her from achieving her dreams? find out in To Dance. I like this book because it makes it seem like you are the one in the spotlight experiencing all the hard, sad and even happy times in Sienna’s life.

The reviews below really don’t help the reader decide whether to read the book. The reviewer is too busy trying to be cute! Or the review doesn’t give the reader enought information to help us decide whether to read the book!

Riordan,  Rick.  39 Clues: Maze of Bones.

39 Clues is an amazing story,. It’s about a brother and sister, Dan and Amy, who go off to find 39 clue. It’s a dangerous hunt but they can’t turn back now, especially when evil relatives they can’t trust are also searching for the clues!  I love this book because the author uses descriptive words that bring the book alive…….
BEST BOOK EVER!!!!IF YOU DON-T READ THEN EVIL CHEESE BURGERS WILL ATTACK!! SO READ!!! THEY ARE COMING TO SUPPORT THIS BOOK!!!!
(Although the reviewer did tell us why he/she liked the book, the sentence about evil cheeseburgers doesn’t sound like a professional. Although elementary students aren’t professional writers they should strive to make their reviews professional.–EDITOR)

Riordan, Rick. The Titans Curse.

Hello, all readers, STOP what your reading and start the “Titans Curse.” The Titans Curse is the third book of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. The Titans Curse is about a 15 year old boy, Percy Jackson, who is the son of the Sea God Poseidon. But when DR. Thorn disappears with Annabeth on his back, taking her with him, Percy, Grover, Thalia, and the hunters, Zoe Nightstand and Bianca, set out to find Annabeth. Will they survive? (Although the reviewer gave a good summary of the book, he/she did’t tell us what make the book worth reading.)
